Arctic Cultural Centre (Hammerfest - Norway)

A new artistic cultural centre opened in the Norwegian town of Hammerfest in January 2009. The 5,000 m2 complex, located on the waterfront, provides space for art, cultural events and conferences. The Arctic Culture Centre (ACC) is part of a broader plan to turn the area into an attractive and inviting urban centre. In the design accessibility and openness are key, which is why the various rooms (units) come together in a central ‘hall’ that features a great deal of glass and abundant light. The rooms have a variety of functions and some doors had to cover an opening of 9 m2 (3 by 3 metres). The doors also had to be sound-insulating (Rw = 50 dB), some of them in combination with 60 minutes’ fire resistance and a panic exit device.

Merford Special Doors was one of the few international suppliers capable of meeting this combination of requirements. Merford supplied six 3 by 3 metre double-sash doors that meet the requirements.
